21st Annual ISBA Mutual Jerry Mirza Memorial Risk Management Conference: Law Practice Matters

When: October 10, 11, 12 and 13, 2017
Where: Collinsville, Bloomington, Oakbrook Terrace and Chicago
What: 21st Jerry Mirza Memorial Risk Management Conference: Law Practice Matters

As the law evolves, lawyers must continue to stay abreast of those changes. As the legal profession evolves, how we practice law becomes more important.

Nothing highlights this more than the 2015 change to the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct requiring lawyers to also strive for reasonable technological competence. Yet technology is not the only aspect of law that is changing. Consumers are changing too. To deliver competent, high quality legal service, lawyers must strive to meet the evolving demands and deadlines of clients. More than ever before, law practice matters.

As technology evolves, lawyers must continue to develop ethical and efficient office systems and procedures to meet the evolving needs of clients and the changing face of law practice. Better systems means better client service; better client service means happier clients. Happier clients mean fewer client problems and fewer law firm risks. Yes, law practice matters.

In this conference, ISBA Mutual insured lawyers learned about the ever-changing risks to practice with solutions to prevent them from stinging their firms. Plus, they received practical ideas, tips, and strategies to improve their practices and their enjoyment from them.

Co-Sponsored by Marcum LLP

The world uses electronics for communicating, transacting business, and everyday living. Cybercrime has become big business for those who want to cause chaos and put your company at risk. Simply answering an email from someone you know may very well be an issue on your electronic device. There are many different viruses, malware, and other corrupt spyware that can be placed on your electronic devices. This session looked at what could go wrong in your cyber world and how you can best protect yourself and your firm from the problems that can linger on and cause your firm’s and your clients’ secrets to be lost.

20th Annual ISBA Mutual Jerry Mirza Memorial Risk Management Conference: Optimize Your Success in a Changing World

When: October 18, 19, 20 and 21, 2016
Where: Collinsville, Bloomington, Oakbrook Terrace and Chicago
What: 20th Jerry Mirza Memorial Risk Management Conference: Optimize Your Success in a Changing World

It seems that the only thing in life that never changes is when the umpire yells “Strike three!” Everything else changes. Despite our staid reputation, change has long been occurring in the legal profession:

  • Technology continues to expand and evolve across law firms;
  • Internet technologies have empowered consumers, and are changing how legal services are delivered;
  • Hourly rates are giving way to flat fees in some practice areas;
  • Mobile devices and pervasive connectivity are changing clients’ expectations of communication with their lawyers;
  • Non-lawyers are providing some legal services online, even across state lines that traditionally limit lawyers;
  • State bars and courts are exploring the licensing of non-lawyer alternatives to provide legal services.

Participants received practical strategies for making the most of these changes to the legal professions so that they, their firms and their clients can thrive in the coming years.

19th Annual ISBA Mutual Jerry Mirza Risk Management Conference: Tomorrow Is Today

When: October 13, 14, 15, 16, 2015
Where: Fairview Heights, Bloomington, Oakbrook Terrace and Chicago
What: 19th Jerry Mirza Memorial Risk Management Conference: Tomorrow is TODAY: A Day in the Life of a Technology Oriented Law Firm

Today’s client expects their lawyer to be as technologically advanced, if not more so, then they are. Clients expect their lawyers to able to communicate electronically; save money by using technology to easily, quickly and securely store and share documents and information with them and others; to use legal research and technological tools to represent them in and outside of the office. Clients also want you or anyone else in your office to be able to answer questions regarding their file if and when they call, not “I’ll pull your file and get back to you tomorrow.” The bottom line is that if you are not taking advantage of technology in your law practice then you are not practicing law as effectively and efficiently as possible. This seminar will discuss today’s technology that is being used by thousands of lawyers and firms throughout the US to serve their clients. It will show you a “day in the life” of a technologically oriented lawyer, using tools that are readily available. Here is what you can expect to learn from this seminar:

  • How to use available technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness in your office and operations while avoiding ethical and technology pitfalls
  • How all of your information, including file details and documents, can be available wherever you have an internet connection
  • What are the potential ethical and technological pitfalls and what you need to know about using this technology consistent with the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • How to use Fastcase, the legal research service that is free to all ISBA and ISBA Mutual Insurance members, in the office and on the road on your mobile device
  • How you can use technology in Court and elsewhere for presentation, electronic discovery, trial and more
  • What apps and programs are available for Apple, Windows and Android that you should consider using

  • Nerino J. Petro, Jr. Chief Information Officer for Holstrom & Kennedy, P.C.
